“I was in prison and you came to visit me” (Mt 25:36) – Brazil

23 March, 2020

Salve María!

Dear Religious Family,

From September 14-15, in the city of Serra Espírito Santo, in Brazil, we had the grace of being able to visit and preach a two-day retreat with talks and time for prayer, adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and the Holy Mass, at a maximum security prison, for a group of 30 inmates.

It was an immense grace for two reasons: first, because in a concrete way we brought the Gospel to those who labor and are burdened[1] secondly, on account of what Our Lord says: “I was in prison and you visited me” Mt. 25:36. For both of these graces, we give thanks to God.

We do not have pictures because the use of cell phones and cameras was prohibited, but even though you cannot see the images, know that “what is essential is invisible to the eye”[2], that is, God, who by his grace transforms us interiorly and “makes all things new”[3]. In fact, on Thursday 9/19, we returned to visit two of them who asked to make a confession but we were unable to achieve this immediately as this too needed authorization, but we trusted that God would move the secondary causes.

[In total, more than 50 lay persons worked for the retreat, but not all of them were able to enter the penitentiary.]

May the Holy Spirit continue the work that has begun.
